Medical Administrative Assistant


Medical administrative assistants are often key employees in hospitals, clinics and other health care organizations. They have the skills and knowledge to help medical providers comply with laws and rules. They know how to develop effective office procedures and workflow.

At Globe University-Eau Claire, we offer two programs that train students to become medical administrative assistants. A student can earn either an associate degree or a diploma. He or she will be ready for an administrative career with a variety of health care providers and other organizations.

Program details

Students in the associate program can expect to complete their AAS degrees in 18 months of full-time study. They take office administration classes and complete general education courses that strengthen their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Core classes in the program include the following:

  • Medical terminology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Health care law and ethics
  • Medical transcription
  • Medical office procedures

Students in the diploma program are able to complete their coursework in 12 months if they attend college full-time. They take the core classes required for the associate degree; diploma programs do not require students to take general education classes.

Career options for medical administrative assistants

Our programs train students for entry-level office positions in hospitals, clinics and public health organizations. Whatever the job title, they undertake tasks such as these:

  • Scheduling
  • Transcribing
  • Maintaining records
  • Managing offices
  • Greeting patients
  • Processing insurance claims

After working in the field for a while, medical administrative assistants may able to move into positions such as patient relations representative, office management or hospital admissions coordinator.
